A Charleston Neighborhood Guide
3 breweries in West Ashley
West Ashley sits just across the Ashley River from the Charleston peninsula, close enough for a quick trip downtown yet relaxed enough to feel like its own neighborhood. Its brewery scene clusters in two areas: the walkable Avondale district, where shops and restaurants line the street, and the wider Savannah Highway corridor that runs through the heart of West Ashley.
Frothy Beard Brewing Company anchors the scene on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. A West Ashley fixture since 2013, it pairs 20 to 32 rotating taps with a full pub kitchen turning out pizzas, burgers, and wings, and it welcomes dogs on the patio.
Charles Towne Fermentory runs two of the area's taprooms. The original opened in Avondale in 2016 inside a former dry-cleaning building on Savannah Highway, leaning into hop-forward and fermentation-driven beers in a small, neighborhood-scale space. The Garden, on Ashley River Road, opened in 2022 as a mostly outdoor beer garden with a covered deck, live music, and rotating food trucks.
Between them, these breweries cover a lot of ground: food-truck taprooms and full kitchens, intimate indoor bars and open-air gardens, all within a short drive of one another and tp downtown.
