A Charleston Neighborhood Guide
Breweries in Park Circle, North Charleston
2 breweries in Park Circle
Park Circle is the walkable heart of the North Charleston beer scene. The neighborhood grew up around a circular park laid out in the early 1900s, and its main strip along East Montague Avenue now holds restaurants, bars, and shops, with breweries a few blocks off it in the surrounding streets. For visitors it is the one part of North Charleston where you can park once, walk between taprooms, and find dinner without getting back in the car.
Two breweries sit inside the neighborhood. Commonhouse Aleworks on O'Hear Avenue is the larger of the two, with a big indoor taproom, an expansive outdoor beer garden, and a full Swig & Swine barbecue menu on site. A portion of every beer sold goes to community organizations. A few blocks away on Chateau Avenue, Wyrd Sisters Taphouse & Brewery is South Carolina's first majority woman-owned and operated brewery, a small 1,200-square-foot taproom with a large backyard that pours small-batch, culinary-driven beers. The taproom itself is 21 and up, while leashed dogs and kids are welcome in the yard.
Both welcome dogs outdoors, which makes Park Circle one of the easier places in Charleston to bring one along. Commonhouse has its own parking lot; Wyrd Sisters relies on street and neighborhood parking.
Two of the area's longest-running breweries are a short drive from the circle. Holy City Brewing, founded in 2011, has a creekside brewhouse, a very large outdoor yard, a scratch kitchen, and a raw bar, on Aragon Avenue just south of the neighborhood. COAST Brewing Co., Charleston's original craft brewery from 2007, pours on the old Navy base a few minutes away. Add either to a Park Circle afternoon and you have four breweries within a five-minute radius, more than any other corner of the Charleston map.
