Lo-Fi Brewing

Lo-Fi Brewing opened in 2016 on Meeting Street Road, on the upper peninsula north of downtown Charleston. It was founded by Jason Caughman, who previously co-founded Pisgah Brewing near Asheville and describes Lo-Fi as a continuation of that work. The brewery takes a deliberately small, quality-over-quantity approach.

Rather than chase a huge tap list, Caughman focuses on making a handful of beers well. The signature pours are the Mexican Lager, one of the area's better-known lagers, and the Glitter Pony Belgian Tripel, a complex, well-regarded modern classic. A unicorn mascot appears across the brand, and "Pure Luxury" serves as the unofficial tagline.

The taproom is a warehouse turned drinking space with a rustic, dim, industrial feel, often described as the closest thing Charleston's beer scene has to a no-frills neighborhood dive, in the best sense. It's a low-key, locals-first room rather than a polished destination taproom.

Lo-Fi keeps a tight schedule and doesn't operate an in-house kitchen, with food vendors handling the eats when they're on-site. Its beer is self-distributed across the Carolinas, so you'll spot Lo-Fi cans well beyond the brewery. As part of the Meeting Street Road brewery pocket, it fits naturally into a downtown Charleston taproom crawl.
