Johns Island · Johns Island, SC
Estuary Beans & Barley opened on Johns Island in 2020 with an unusual premise: it's both a coffee roastery and a brewery under one roof. The name nods to its two crafts, "beans" for the coffee roasted on-site and "barley" for the beer, and the result is a space that works equally well for a morning coffee or an evening pint.
On the coffee side, you'll find espresso drinks and cold brew made from beans roasted right on Johns Island. On the beer side, Estuary pours its own house brews alongside cider and wine, and the team is known for collaboration releases with other breweries, including an international partnership with a brewery in Cornwall, UK. A wood-fired food truck on-site handles the kitchen, turning out pizza, and the menu extends to pastries, soft pretzels, and house-made gelato.
The building itself is part of the draw, with an upper level overlooking the brewing and seating areas, plus an outdoor patio with picnic tables, fire pits, string lights, and plenty of greenery. It's dog-friendly and family-friendly, making it a flexible place to settle in for a while.
Located off Meeks Farm Road, Estuary gives Johns Island a craft destination that doesn't fit neatly into one category. Whether you're starting the day with coffee or winding down with a beer after a trip out to Wadmalaw or the sea islands, it's a distinctive counterpoint to the breweries across the river in the city.
